Fair price for your BN from LFS?

What do you think is a fair price for your BN's from your LFS?

I wont let them have mine for any less then £1.50 that is for commons at and 1" - 1 1/2" dont let them offer you any less than that they are only going to put them up at £5 each or more. I have taken them to a couple of my local LFS and they both try paying as little as 75p but they just out to rip you off. it helps if you go in quite often and build up a relationship with them. the only prob you may come across is if there is sombody willing to undercut you . Iv taken over from another local breader that has moved away i bought most of her stock

As youve posted in $$$'s ive gone for $2.00 which pretty much equals £1.00 British Quid....

Hrmmm, thats a tough one on an international forum. To a fish shop i sell mine to them at whatever the bulk outlets are selling for rounded down to the nearest dollar. so they do vary a bit but in general its $3 for commons, $9 for albinos, $15 for albino longfins and $23 for common longfins. When i sell to the public i add a couple of $$$ on so its $5 for a common, $10 for an albino, $15 for an albino longifn and $25 for a common longfin.

I sell mine at 3.3cms for shortfins (TL) and 3.7 for longfins (TL)

iv never sold fish to lfs and dont know what i could get for them but i do have 100+ common fry i should b getting rid of eventually. so i just chose to get what i can for them, im not fussed. its no wonder lfs charge so much for them if they buyin them for that much doug

cant sell commons round here,same story they are given to them.

asked about other than common, and all local shops to me only get them from the trade

Went into my lfs today to find out about selling my babies when they are big enough and was offered £1.60 each for them and was asked if I would be able to supply them ongoing!

well pleased for you,it not just me i asked but this area is full of bns,they will take them for nothing,used to sell angel fish to many shops ,maybe L numders will change their minds.

The guy siad that they dont normally take fish from local breeders but because I go in there a lot and he said 'I know you look after your fish' he was happy to buy them from me.
He also said that because I was just up the road from them that the fish wouldnt be anywhere near as stressed as they usually are when they arrive from his normal trade supplier...

They dont really go in for the L numbers much around here. The same guy said that he had bought some to sell before (the cheaper end of the market) and they just didnt sell...

Both albino and brown???

I would say it depends on the size.
A little one is a lot cheaper then a fully grwon one at my LFS.
Small one €2 (US$2.50)
Adult size around 10cm €7 (US$8.75)

I sell to several pet stores and if they buy on a reg basis from me i sell my long fin albino and my long fin green dragon for $ 4 bucks each. my L 144 i sell for $5 each . i haven`t got any reds big enough yet to sell.

depends on what store im selling to , most likes then 1 1/2 inchs the others one wants them 2 inchs

Hey all...

I found this thread provided some interesting information on market pricing... especially for the Adelaide market.

I have been selling 3cm common fry for $1.75 to Seaview aquariums (poor return for hard work eh!) I will certainly have to double check this price especially as they sell on for approx. $11-13 AUD.

that is way too cheap compared to what they sell for here

I have seen the other side of this coin having worked in a shop that buys from people.

remember we have to feed them, heat them, deal with any deaths and look after them. While I agree that some shops do pay too little, consider that the power pill of a small shop will be in the order of several $1000s a month.

I spoke with my LFS here in Geislingen Germany today and he will only take fish for free (no matter what kind). Says that keeping the fish until they are sold is expensive enough. So it definetly agrees to what Doug is saying here.

im glad i live here then from what your saying about the pet shop owners not wanting to pay much. i guess it is differant in every country

You are absolutely correct. I remember back home in Sydney we paid people good money for their fish whilst I was working in a LFS.

i breed fish as a full time hobby and its tough some times just to break even on a slow growing fish but then some wks i have done rather well .

I don't think anybody ever got rich from breeding fish. It is definetly a labour of love.
