| Subject: range of age for breeding? Wed Jan 26, 2011 7:09 am | |
| Just wanted to start a post about the range of age BN (in particular peppermints) are known to breed? Or when do BN start to slow down and stop breeding? I have read a lot of different answers floating around forums so for those who breed what are your experiences with this? And does size make a difference in quality of spawning? Will a bigger male and female have more success? Cheers | |

I would say for commons mine will breed from 10 months, maybe before, to about 5-7 years depending on how they are treated.
Couldnt tell you for peps or any others as I have never had a pair from start to finish like i have with the commons.
also the females tend to stop breeding before the males do, they can slow down after even 2 years and some may stop after 3-5 years.
I know these are wide timeframes but they are animals just like us and they vary a fair bit.

| Ok so iv been doing some extra curricular studying on peps because I want to breed more So far what iv come up with as far as age and size is concerned. From hatch to maturity it generally takes about 2 years. Iv read a fewbreeding articles and some report there breeders ages at 16, 18, 20 and 24 months. Differences could come down to age of the fish when purchased. Also the sizes they breed at has been reported with individuals from as little as 7cm all the way up to 15cm Lastly thought I mite add that the time it takes for fry to reach the desired 3cm+ selling size is usually around the 3 month mark. Sizes may vary due to diet, tank size and water quality. | |
